The debate over insourcing vs. outsourcing has become one of the most heated subjects in business today.

As you may be aware, outsourcing and insourcing are two methods for distributing an organization’s work to multiple firms for various strategic reasons.

Let’s look at the differences between insourcing and outsourcing to clear things up and help you decide which form of sourcing is ideal for your business.

Which is which?

This choice can be made in a variety of ways. Your company may be doing so well that you’re considering outsourcing to assist with volume. Alternatively, your company may be through a financial crisis, and you’re considering outsourcing as a cost-cutting measure.

In any case, deciding whether to insource or outsource is a major choice that should not be taken lightly.

This decision has a lot riding on it. Your decision might be the reason your firm develops at an exponential pace or stops it from going out of business. It’s also possible that it’s the cause of your company’s demise.

The term “insource” or “insourcing” refers to the process of having a job or business activity completed by a corporate employee.

The practice of having someone external to your organization, who is not an employee, execute a task or business activity is referred to as “outsourcing.” This might be a consulting firm or an outsourcing firm.

Consider the case when your company has a lot of accounts payable tasks. You may either engage an individual from your firm to manage your accounts payable or outsource it to a company that specializes in doing so. This is an excellent (and all-too-common) illustration of insourcing vs. outsourcing.

Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of each option now that you know how important the decision to insource versus outsource is.

Insourcing vs. Outsourcing: What Are the Benefits of Insourcing?

In the debate between insourcing and outsourcing, there are several compelling reasons to select insourcing.

The first is that when you outsource a function, you generally have more control over the process.

Consider the preceding example: if you hired a new person to handle your accounts payable, you would have a lot more control over how they were taught. That is, you could set standards for how they performed your accounts payable that you would not have been able to do if you worked with an accounts payable outsourcing business.

Employees will have a greater sense of pride and ownership in their job.

This means they’ll go above and above to ensure that your company’s accounts payable are in top shape.

They’ll be more creative and make fewer mistakes than an employee of an accounts payable outsourcing service who isn’t invested in your company. This is a well-known idea that may be applied to a wide range of circumstances. When you own something, you will always have greater pride in it than if it belongs to someone else.

Having inside personnel to handle your accounts payable allows you to personalize the process and respond to changes faster than if you outsourced.

Because the outsourcing firm will be serving a variety of customers, they will need a uniform procedure that will apply to all of them. This implies that any modification or things you do differently from them will almost certainly be thrown out the window.

Let’s assume your company obtains a new client that wants their accounts payable handled in a certain way. Your internal employee will be able to respond to that request much more rapidly than an accounts payable firm, where you’ll have to phone the client success manager and then seek a pricing quotation for the new process modification.
